Crafty's Take On: Spectrums

Published on 2 February 2024 at 07:47

What are spectrums? Well, I don't claim to be any kind of scientist, but I've gotten a general idea over my lifespan. The most common ones that humans think about is the color spectrum- after all, there are HUNDREDS of shades of the color red alone, and that's just red. The chosen image for this post is a perfect example of this, no two colors are quite the same, swirling together to create something unique and interesting. And that is what spectrums of all kinds are about.

Some people will try to tell you that our world is filled with binaries- man and woman, light and dark, left and right, hero and villain. But binaries aren't something found in nature. Indeed, they are a very human invention, and one of the only human binary systems that works exists within our computers and is far removed from the natural world. Instead, the examples I used are more in spectrums than anything: a wide variety, diluted down to humanity's understanding of our world.

Indeed, how do you judge how heroic or villainous somebody is? Day is light sure, but dawn, dusk, shadows, and lightbulbs are here to knock everything off course. Directions have been "simplified" using roads and pathways, but just saying left or right without additional instruction oftentimes won't get you there. Even the idea of men and women is a spectrum- because really, does your definition of being a man or a woman align with someone else's exactly? No, of course not.

Nature is truly something humanity has both revered and been at war with for nearly all of our existence. Spectrums are always at odds with the human binaries and you know what? The spectrums are winning. Before you say that is a bad thing, take a second to stop and think. Why would it be bad? Nature is what comes natural to every being on the planet, not just wild animals or plants. That includes humans, even if many of us resist it. Times may change. So do spectrums. That's the point.

What's that point? That humanity itself is a spectrum. Humans as individuals are unique, and that means they have their own unique struggles, their own emotions, their own thoughts. Why does somebody look at you with hate? Because they haven't began their own journey of self-improvement yet. They have no desire to learn, change, and grow.  Some refuse this journey all their life, and for some, it only takes a few years to begin forging their path.

You don't have to stand out to be unique to your peers. Be yourself. That, in many cases, is the most vibrant red on the spectrum.

It’s crazy how diverse all kinds of spectrums are, and how insane it is that those spectrums can have smaller spectrums within them, and it generally just keeps going! The systems we humans have created just throughout the passage of time is truly bonkers :)
